Glass Baby Bottles:

The advantage of a glass bottle is that they are BPA free which means the material used to make the bottle does not contain harmful chemicals. If you are used to warming the milk for your baby during cold months the glass material would keep the original taste and not change it slightly as plastic bottles. Bottles that are made from glass tend to last longer if you buy a silicone sleeve to prevent them from breaking in case they fall on the floor.  Some mothers do worry that because these bottles are by nature heavier because of the glass material that their baby might not hold it very well. Below you can find different baby bottle brands that are made of glass you can click on any of the images for more information.

Plastic Baby Bottles:

The advantage of plastic is that if the bottle fell on the floor it would not break. The plastic is not heavy compared to a glass bottle. If you choose to purchase a plastic baby bottle, make sure that it has a label that says (BPA FREE). BPA Free means that the material used to make the baby bottle do not contain harmful chemicals. Never ever boil a plastic bottle because it can release chemicals you can heat it in a microwave or a dishwasher instead. Silicone Baby Bottles:

Silicone bottles are made of a soft light material that does not contain harmful materials, therefore, these bottles are BPA free. It is not likely that these bottles would break like glass bottles or crack like plastic ones. If you care about making a change and helping the environment it is great to know that silicone bottles are eco-friendly. It is good to know that these bottles are more difficult to find in local stores in case you need a replacement in an emergency. Below you can find a silicone baby bottle you can click it for more information.

Stainless Steel Baby Bottles:

Steel a very unlikely type of bottle yet the most durable one. If you are those kinds of people that drop everything on the floor, then you cannot go wrong with a stainless-steel bottle since they are very difficult to break.  In addition, these bottles are resistant to scratches or cracks and are very easy to clean. One of the downsides is that you will not be able to measure the amount of milk your baby is drinking   Note that if you are on a tight budget the price of these bottles is on the expensive side. Below you can find some stainless steel baby bottles you can click on the image for more information.

Disposable Baby Bottles:

Disposables are made of plastic but these require a disposable sterilized liner for each time that you will feed your baby. Disposable bottles are very easy to clean specially when you are on the go or traveling. However, you will need to make sure you buy enough liners to continue to use the disposable bottles. Usually a pack of liners comes with 100 and are not that expensive. If you care about the environment there will be so much waste. In the end only you can decide what is best for your baby needs.

Venting System Baby Bottles:

These are better known as anti-colic baby bottles because they have the venting system to reduce colic. If your baby ingest air then that would cause colic in their little tummy. No air means you will have a happy baby with no colic and no reflux. These

Bottle Shape:

The shape of the bottle that you will need depends on how old or how many months is your baby. This will also depend if you are mostly breastfeeding or bottle feeding. For your newborn there are 4oz bottles which are great since they are small and perfect for your little one. As your baby grows you will need to replace the bottles since they will increase the amount they drink in one sitting. The size of baby bottles comes from 4oz to 12oz and specifically for the months and age of your baby.

Nipple Shape:

Just like bottles nipples come in all sizes and shapes. They can be classified as a wide shape. A wide shape nipple helps transition breastfed babies to bottle fed when mommy has to go back to work. Perhaps the other nipples can be classified as narrow shape. A narrow shape nipple is preferred for good latching. Our babies are unique and not just because a certain bottle and nipple shape works for one baby does not mean it will work for another one.

When to replace your bottles?

Baby bottles should be replaced every two to three months. The way you will know if you need to replace your baby bottle before two to three months is when it has a crack which can lead to bacteria hiding in those spots which is not good. When the bottles are discolored they should be replaced.  Another sign that your baby bottle should be replaced is when nipples are either cracked or bitten because you do not want it to be a choking hazard. In addition, if when you turn the bottle upside down the milk comes out rushing and not dripping it should be replaced because it means the hole have gotten too big.

Which Bottle Should You Buy?

As you may know, I have three children and for my first child, I use the old time Avent baby bottles which are very well made and help to reduce colic pain. However, for my second baby, Avent baby bottles brand did not work since he suffered from reflux. Instead, I used Dr. Brown’s baby bottles which were a blessing to reduce my little one’s reflux. Guess what happened for my third child? I went and bought Dr. Brown’s baby bottles thinking that they will suit my baby needs and unfortunately, I had to give them away and tried MAM baby bottles that have a base venting system that reduced not only colic but reflux for my little one. I recommend trying one brand first and see how your baby likes it every baby is unique as you can see from my experience and what works for one does not mean it will work for another child.
